Artisan working with wood in workshop

Built from Belief in Handwork

We started harbor-savanna because we noticed something disappearing from the marketplace: genuine connection between those who make and those who cherish what's made.

How We Began

Eight years ago, a small group of us organized our first artisan gathering in a community hall outside Vancouver. We had twelve makers, maybe forty visitors, and a shared sense that something meaningful could grow from this modest beginning.

The response surprised us. People didn't just come to browse; they stayed. They asked questions. They wanted to understand the process behind each piece, the inspiration, the hours invested. Artisans found themselves in actual conversations rather than transactions.

That first market taught us that there's profound hunger for authentic craftsmanship and direct human connection in the buying experience.

What Guides Us

Quality Over Quantity

We carefully curate every market, selecting artisans whose work demonstrates exceptional skill and authentic creative voice. Not everyone who applies is accepted.

Fair Compensation

Artisans deserve to earn sustainable income from their work. Our fee structures and pricing guidance help makers charge what their time and expertise truly warrant.

Community Building

Beyond individual sales, we're fostering a network where artisans support each other, share knowledge, and collaborate on larger projects.

Regional Diversity

Canada's craft traditions vary beautifully across regions. We actively seek makers from coast to coast, ensuring our markets reflect this geographic and cultural richness.

Our Approach to Curation

When we evaluate potential vendors, we look beyond technical proficiency. We're seeking artisans who can articulate their creative process, who understand their materials deeply, and who bring something distinctive to their work.

A perfectly executed piece that feels derivative doesn't interest us as much as work that shows genuine experimentation and personal vision, even if it's still developing.

This philosophy means our markets feel alive and unpredictable. You won't find fifteen booths selling similar items. Each maker occupies their own creative territory.

The Team Behind the Markets

We're a lean operation: three full-time staff and a network of contractors who help with event logistics. None of us came from traditional retail backgrounds. Our founding team includes a former gallery curator, a sustainable agriculture advocate, and someone who spent years organizing community festivals.

This unconventional mix informs how we work. We think like curators, operate with community-building principles, and maintain the scrappy resourcefulness of festival organizers working on tight budgets.

Tangible Outcomes

Several artisans who started with us at small regional markets have since opened their own studios, hired apprentices, and built sustainable businesses around their craft. That progression is what we're here to facilitate.

Where We're Headed

The next chapter involves expanding our workshop program for emerging artisans and developing longer-term partnerships with cultural institutions and municipalities interested in supporting craft economies.

We're also exploring ways to maintain the intimate, high-touch experience of our markets as we grow. Scaling thoughtfully without losing the qualities that make these gatherings special is the central challenge we're navigating now.
